THE FiNiSH LiNE

This post was supposed to go a different route but as I was writing this, I found out that one of my cousins has lost his battle with cancer. It is a bittersweet moment for me. It is natural to be sad or be overcome by emotions when someone passes but I find myself very calm and peaceful as I write this post which was inspired by him.

Most people live their life following the status quo. They grow up, get a job [a good one hopefully] and accept whatever is handed to them. Before you get all mad about my generalization look around you. How many people around you right now are doing exactly what they want to do?

My cousin lived his life on his terms and did whatever he wanted. I know a handful of people that can honestly stake this claim about their lives. Living by your own terms is an extremely hard feat to accomplish and it takes a very strong minded individual to achieve this.

While I was discussing my cousin with my mom, she was upset about losing her nephew. I tried to explain to her that as upset as she is, she shouldn’t be consumed by those emotions because he lived a better life than most people ever will. He was not better off than any one, he definitely didn’t have an easy life, but as long as I can recall he always did his own thing.

Think about that vacation you took that was one of the best times of your life or something as simple as being alone for a little while when you want or need a break from the world around you. There is so much to be said about doing the thing’s you want to do.

I have hustled my ass off for the small amount of life’s perks I have. The benefits I have attained due to my relentless drive have far outweighed all the risk involved in my pursuit of the life I want. None of it is being handed to me. As I have stated in prior posts, I’ve known what I wanted to do all the time and now that I have children, it has become more important for me to impress upon them the ideal of pursuing what you want with a vengeance.

Everyday I have to GRIND. There are plenty of bumps and bruises that you will receive but they are part of your journey regardless of what route you take. You are guaranteed to get the same amount of bumps and bruises chasing your dreams or making someone else’s dreams come true so you might as well go after yours. The risk is inherently greater but so are the rewards.

As we approach the finish line of 2015, take into consideration the year you just had, the good, the bad, the ugly and realize that a single change of perspective will enable you see the endless possibilities you have in front of you.
